Excerpt from Coningsby

It was a bright May morning some twelve years ago, when a youth of still tender age, for he had certainly not entered his teens by more than two years, was ushered into the waiting-room of a house in the vicinity of St. James's Square, which, though with the general appearance of a private residence, and that too of no very ambitious character, exhibited at this period symptoms of being occupied for some public purpose.

The house door was constantly open, and frequent guests even at this early hour crossed the threshold. The hall table was covered with sealed letters; and the hall porter inscribed in a book the name of every individual who entered.

The young gentleman we have mentioned found himself in a room which offered few resources for his amusement. A largo table amply covered with writing materials, and a few chairs were its sole furniture, except the grey drugget that covered the floor, and a muddy mezzotinfo of the Duke of Wellington that adorned its cold walls. There was not even a newspaper; and the only books were the Court Guide and the London Directory.

Some stretches of this book are not very interesting because they require a detailed knowledge of English history. But the book has two advantages. The style is beautiful, and although it is a little archaic, it is still very impressive. Second, the book shows that the kind of antics that one sees in government belong to the past as well as the present.

Coningsby Classic Reprint Benjamin Disraeli 9781440073199 Books Reviews

No stars is no mistake. Calling this the " Preferred" edition is a joke. The copy does not lay out or wrap properly no matter how large or small the type selected. It's very difficult to read and is not worth even 99 cents. I wouldn't accept it as a gift. After trying to read two chapters, I bought a different edition.

How can offer such a defective product?
I read this classic because it was referred to in one of the Anne Perry Mysteries. I received this book free from for Readers. I want to thank the publisher for generously making the book available at no charge. I enjoyed the read, and will seek out other books by the author(s).
A great political novel by a great PM. Too bad none of his books is in print.
Whereas 'Sybil, or the Two Nations' was worth reading for the underlying plot and the vigour with which Disraeli championed the underdogs of Victorian society, I'm afraid the endless accounts of the political infighting of the early part of the 19th century exhausted my patience and I did not feel that the plot was sufficient compensation for the boredom. For only the third or fourth time in a long life I abandoned the book a quarter way through.
This edition of a classic Disraeli novel is unreadable because of the smallness of the print.
I bought the book because it was mentioned in a book on the history of History Celebrations and I am an amateur Historian who makes presentations on the history of Christmas celebrations and how the holiday has evolved and changed over the years. It does have an interesting description of a Christmas celebration worthy of Dickens, but most of the book, in which I have little interest, seems to have a wordy heavy style a bit like a Russian novel but less interesting. However, for those interested in the life and times of the Great British PM, it is no doubt a treasure trove of knowledge of the writer but unfortunately by modern standards a slog of a read.
Totally satisfird
